Health insurance (BHYT) policies have recently undergone several important changes under Law No. 51/2024/QH15, particularly regarding expanded benefits and adjustments to contribution rates applicable to pupils and students. Let’s take a look at the latest updates to help students proactively protect their health and use their health insurance benefits effectively during the 2026–2027 academic year.
Key Changes to Note
- Expanded benefits: From July 1, 2026, health insurance participants may receive payment from the Health Insurance Fund equivalent to 50% of their benefit entitlement in certain cases of outpatient medical examination and treatment at eligible healthcare facilities, in accordance with current regulations.
- Flexible payment options: Students can choose to pay their health insurance contributions for periods of 3 months, 6 months, or 12 months.
- The State supports 50% of the contribution: The level of State support is calculated in accordance with current regulations, including an additional 4.5% support component.
- Amount paid by students: Based on the current reference amount stated in the latest updates, students are required to pay VND 56,925 per month, equivalent to VND 683,100 per year.
Current reference amount: VND 2,530,000 per month. Contribution rates may be adjusted if the State changes the reference amount or health insurance support policies.

What Students Should Keep in Mind
To proactively protect their health insurance benefits, students should:
- Check the validity period of their health insurance card;
- Know their registered primary healthcare facility;
- Understand their health insurance benefits before seeking medical care;
- Bring their health insurance card or appropriate identification information when visiting a healthcare facility;
- Stay updated on the latest health insurance policies and regulations.
Why Should Students Avoid Interrupting Their Health Insurance Coverage?
Health risks can occur at any time, while medical examination and treatment costs continue to increase. Maintaining continuous health insurance coverage helps students:
- Receive timely healthcare and reduce financial burdens;
- Enjoy their full benefits in accordance with regulations;
- Demonstrate responsibility toward themselves, their families, and the community.
Health is an essential factor in every student’s learning and personal development journey. Maintaining continuous health insurance coverage not only helps students access healthcare services in accordance with regulations but also reduces the financial burden when unexpected health problems arise.
